Dale,

The north end is now connected to the mainland – so there would be no wading necessary. However, you are not officially allowed to access the island from the new land bridge and the area is blocked with a fence (which you can easily walk around).

Or is this something that should be avoided? My wife and I have 2 small children, so consider the fact that 2 of us will have to be carried.

There is a public boat ramp behind the Don Caesar – https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=27.708457,-82.735799&spn=0.00161,0.002064&t=k&z=20 – but there is almost no parking at all – only the side of the road. There are also a few spots on the side of the road just north of the Ft. Desoto boat docks that would get you a little closer to the north end too.
