Shell Key campers are getting ready to help defend Shell Key from the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion. The US Coast Guard has requested that volunteers be prepared to “Pre-Clean” our local beaches in the event that wind or currents push the oil our way. While we are not in the most direct path of the oil, our volunteers need to be available at 36 to 48 hours notice if oil does come our way. More information about this response plan can be found at:

Update: Shell Key is not included in the listed sites for this cleanup plan – presumably because of it’s relative inaccessability. We intend to do our part by mirroring the county’s efforts on Shell Key and will keep our volunteers notified.
