Approaching Shell Key from a distance, we were struck by what appeared to be a long golden (almost fence like) structure all along the Bunces Pass side of the island. As we got closer, it became clear that it was just waves of Sea Oats becoming richer in color with the arrival of Autumn on Shell Key. Sea Oats (Uniola Paniculata) are a primary colonizer of sandbar formed barrier islands. Even though they are edible in a survival situation, they are a protected species in Florida. All plants and animals within the preserve are protected and we appreciate your help in keeping this area pristine and undisturbed.
