Hi Lisa,

Absolutely, you can keep any shells you find.

Hope this helps!

Hi Ranch,

The last storm to have a big impact on the island was hurricane Irma – which resulted in “Irma Pass” being created in the middle of the island. Hurricane Ian did not substantially effect the island.

Hope this helps!

Hi Elizabeth,

1. Day pass and Cost?
There is no cost (other than transportation) to visit the island during the day. There are no passes or check-in requirements for day visitors.

2. Ferry cost for children and adults?
3. Not spending the night just day time how do we get back last ferry out?
Please contact the Ferry providers directly or visit their websites for costs and schedules.

4. How far from Maderina Beach?
By car, the trip to Ft. Desoto Boat Ramps (near Shell Key) is about 15 to 20 miles (30 minutes) depending on your route. Distance from Mad Beach to either of the 3 Ferry providers would be roughly similar.

5. Can you snorkel there and are there rip currents?
Snorkeling is certainly allowed – although you will mostly find sandy bottom without many features. You will see some fish, mollusks and plenty of seashells.

This area is not known for particularly strong rip currents. The National Weather Service gives this area their lowest hazard rating of “No unusual risk from rip currents.” Nevertheless, weak swimmers or families with small children should remain vigilant.

Hope this helps!

Hi Tosha,

Each of the ferries have different policies. For example, Hubbards’ ferry suggests that you order tickets in advance. Most of the ferries will take walk in customers, but it would be first come first serve. So if they are busy, you might have to wait. I would call to make sure.

Hope this helps!

Do you have to make reservations in advance? Or can we show up and pay to get on the ferry on Saturday?

Thanks

Hi Lucy,

Shellkey.org is not affiliated with any of the ferry services listed on this page. You will need to contact them directly for scheduling and tickets.

Marry Christmas to you and yours!
