Camping on Shell Key

Camping Permits are now required for any overnight activity on Shell Key. A permit can be downloaded here. It must be emailed to the county and you must retain a printed copy on your boat. More information is available here: http://www.pinellascounty.org/Environment/pagesHTML/SK_site/sk3000.html

A fee will be charged for camping permits beginning Jan 2009. See the above link for more info.

The "leave no trace" ethic...
Our continued right to visit and camp on Shell Key depends on how well we can learn to manage an ever increasing population of people on this County Preserve. The leave "no trace ethic" means that we are required to remove absolutely sny trace of our camp - including food, refuse and anything that came with us on our boat.

You are your brothers keeper...
While the overwhelming majority of visitors to Shell Key are conscientious and tidy, a few inconsiderate visitors to the island have the ability to ruin it for the rest of us.

At shellkey.org, we are asking you to, whenever possible, take a little trash off the island - even if it is not yours. Keep a few plastic shopping bags on the boat and grab a few items as you are strolling the beach or exploring the pines. You will feel great as you realize that you are making a difference in our struggle to find balance between preservation with public use.

If a lot of people make a little effort, we can sustain this resource despite our growing local population..

Camping Rules...

  • Camping is only allowed in the southern public use area. Camping is now banned on the north end of the island.
  • Please observe all wildlife boundaries and seasonal nesting areas.
  • Portable toilets are now required by the county for any overnight campers or day visitors.
  • Bonfires are allowed unless specified on posted signs during drought conditions. Never cut any tree on the island for firewood. The current exception to that rule is the already cut australian pines which are being erradicated on the south end. These may be burned as long as they last.
  • Please remove any trace of your fire pit - including unburned wood. There should be no trace of your fire pit when you leave.
  • Never put glass in the fire! This leaves extremely dangerous chards of glass hidden in the sand for tomorrow's visitor.
  • Sorry, Alchohol and pets are not allowed anywhere within the preserve boundaries.
  • Please be considerate of nearby campers and keep noise levels to a minimum. at night.
